Set it up in Live.
- Install Knobpilot. It adds both a VST3 and an Audio Unit version.
- In Live, open Settings (Cmd+comma) → Plug-Ins. Turn on Use VST3 Plug-In System Folders, or the Audio Units option if you prefer the AU version, and click Rescan.
- In the browser, open Plug-Ins and drag Knobpilot onto an audio track, a Group track, a Return track or the Main track. On a MIDI track, drop it after the instrument.
- Open the plugin window, scan your installed effects and start the free trial.
- Loop a section, type what you want, and compare the result with what you had.
What stays Live’s job.
EQ Eight, Glue Compressor and the other Live devices are not VST3 or AU plugins, so Knobpilot can’t load them. It builds its chain from third-party effects: FabFilter, Soundtoys, Valhalla, free plugins, whatever you have installed.
Knobpilot’s rack is a serial chain of up to sixteen effects inside one device. It isn’t an Audio Effect Rack, and it leaves your clips, Racks, sends, mixer and automation alone.
Ask for the sound, not the settings.
“Drum bus: more punch, less boxy. Don’t squash the transients.”
“Make this pad wider and darker so it sits behind the lead.”
“Vocal: less boomy, and bring it more up front.”
A drum-bus run: the plugins it chose and every setting it changed.

Mixing in Ableton with your own plugins.
Most Live tutorials build chains from stock devices, because everyone has them. If you’ve bought third-party plugins, you probably reach for those on the parts that matter: a vocal, the drum bus, the Main track. The slow part is the same every time: load the plugin, open its window, find the right band or threshold, listen, adjust.
Knobpilot does that loading and setting for you, inside Live. It measures the audio before and after each change (level, tone, dynamics, stereo width), so the reply tells you what it did and what moved. Original, Previous and Current let you hear the difference, and Match loudness keeps a louder version from fooling you.
An Ableton vocal chain from your own plugins.
By hand, a typical vocal chain on a Live audio track looks like this:
- A corrective EQ first: a high-pass below the voice and a cut where it sounds boomy or boxy, often somewhere between 150 and 400 Hz.
- A compressor to even out the level. Start around 3:1 and aim for a few dB of gain reduction on the loud words.
- A de-esser if the S sounds jump out after compression.
- A tone EQ or saturation for presence and air.
- Reverb and delay last, usually on Return tracks, so several parts can share the same space.
In Live you drag each plugin from Browser → Plug-Ins onto the track in that order, open each window and set it while the vocal loops. The order and the numbers depend on the voice and the song, so you go back and forth a few times.
With Knobpilot, it’s one sentence on the vocal track: “Less boomy, and bring it more up front.” It picks the plugins from your folder, puts them in order, sets them, and lists each value it changed so you can learn from it or take over by hand.

Questions about Knobpilot in Live.
What is the best AI plugin for Ableton Live?
It depends on what you want the AI to do. If you want it to work with the plugins you already paid for, Knobpilot is built for that: you describe the sound, and it loads and sets your own VST3 and AU effects inside Live, then lists every change.
Can Knobpilot use EQ Eight, Glue Compressor or other Live devices?
No. Live’s own devices are not VST3 or AU plugins, so no plugin can load them. Knobpilot works with third-party effects. Your Live devices can stay on the same track, before or after it.
Does it work in Live Lite, Intro, Standard and Suite?
Yes. Every edition of Live 12 loads VST3 and AU plugins, and Knobpilot needs only one device slot.
Does Knobpilot change my clips, mixer or automation?
No. It changes only the plugins inside its own rack. Your clips, the Live mixer, sends, other devices and automation stay as they are.
Knobpilot needs macOS 14 or later and works in any DAW that loads VST3 or AU plugins. Compatibility, how a run works, or back to Knobpilot, the AI mixing plugin.
