This is our own summary of each product’s official pages, as of September 2026. It is not a listening test and makes no claim about which one sounds better. Prices are the vendors’ list prices in US dollars unless noted, before tax.
| Product | What the AI does | Which plugins process the sound | How you pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knobpilot | Builds a chain from a request in chat, sets each plugin’s parameters, measures before and after, and lists every change. | AU and VST3 effects you already own, inside Knobpilot’s rack (up to sixteen). | $15 a month with 3,000 AI credits; 14-day free trial. |
| iZotope Neutron 5 | Mix Assistant analyses the track and proposes a starting setup of Neutron’s modules. | Neutron’s own modules (EQ, compressors, exciter and others). | $299 one-time, or in the iZotope Plus subscription ($15 a month). |
| Sonible smart:EQ 4 | Analyses the track and suggests a corrective EQ curve you can adjust. | Its own EQ. Sonible makes similar smart:comp and other smart: plugins. | One-time purchase; also in the smart:bundle (€249 at the time of writing). |
| Waves StudioVerse | A searchable library of ready-made plugin chains, many shared by producers and engineers, that load inside your DAW. | Waves plugins. | Included in Waves Creative Access subscriptions, from $14.99 a month. |
| Studio Buddy | A Mac app with a Logic Pro plugin. It listens to the session and, after you approve a fix, turns knobs, adds plugins and moves faders in Logic. | The tracks and plugins of your Logic session (Logic Pro 12 or later, macOS 14 or later). | Free tier; paid plans from $15 a month. |
| EchoJay, MixingGPT | Metering and chat advice about your mix. You make the edits. | Your own plugins, set by you. | Free tiers; paid plans from $9.99 and $9 a month. |
The main difference.
Neutron, smart:EQ and StudioVerse process your track with their maker’s own plugins. Knobpilot has no effects of its own: it loads and sets the third-party AU and VST3 plugins you already have, and shows each setting it changed, from the old value to the new one. You can open any of those plugins and take over by hand.
When another tool may fit better.
- You own few third-party effects. A bundle such as Neutron, the smart: plugins or Waves Creative Access brings the processing with it; Knobpilot needs plugins to work with.
- You work only in Logic Pro and want the assistant to work across the whole session, faders included. Studio Buddy is built for that; Knobpilot controls only the plugins inside its own rack.
- You want a second opinion and prefer to make every edit yourself. An advisor such as EchoJay or MixingGPT fits that.
Try it on your own tracks.
The fairest test is your own session: try Knobpilot free for 14 days in your DAW, with the plugins you already own. Read the compatibility notes first.
